The ruins of Whitby Abbey (which has stood on the East Cliffe East since 647 AD), stand dominantly on the Cliff top and can be reached on foot by climbing the 199 steps from the old town. You can see the Abbey from the 3rd Storey front Bedroom.
Stroll along the cobbled streets and visit some of the quirky Independent shops or stop in one of the local fish and chip cafes for lunch. Whether it's a trip on the steam train exploring the North York Moors or discovering the pretty fishing villages of Robin Hood's Bay (6 miles) and Staithes (10 miles), this superb property is ideal any time of the year. Sandsend and Runswick bay are a few miles from the property.
Step into a large hallway with plenty of space for sandy shoes, walking boots and coats. Head into the kitchen and dining area where there is a large family sized oak table for eight people. The well-equipped kitchen is so easy to cook in with two double ovens, one with a microwave and an electric hob. It also has a dishwasher and an integrated washing machine.
Guests can sit around the large extendable country table for breakfast and plan their day. Later, after dinner, wander through the double doors to the quirkily decorated contemporary furnished lounge which has a large screen smart TV/ BT channels and internet with seating for 8 people. Open the door to the patio and garden and extend your space in the warm balmy summer evenings The garden has a sunny south west facing garden and ideal for sunbathing or a barbecue. Completing the ground floor is a separate WC.
Time for bed! , head upstairs to the first floor to the spacious bedrooms, each room has space for clothes storage chest of drawers and mirrors. The master bedroom offers a king-size bed with an en-suite shower room and wc. You can enjoy your morning coffee on your private balcony with views across the meadows in the distance where animals graze in the fields. The second bedroom has a super-king-size bed and has hotel quality beds with 1000 sprung mattresses with a featured wall of panelling and relaxing grey and aqua tones. Finishing this floor is the family bathroom with a bath and shower over and WC. The second floor has two further twin bedrooms suitable for adults and children with a navy and ochre colour scheme–again these beds are hotel quality 1000 sprung single 3ft beds.
Outside, is a lovely rear garden, great for your furry companion to enjoy the warm weather and relax on the sun loungers. Dine alfresco on the dining table and toast to your Yorkshire getaway.
Whitby Golf Club with its 9 hole golf course nearby is half a mile away – just half a mile away from the property - also nearby is Raithwaite Estate hotel where you can go for cocktails and afternoon tea and visit their spa.
Visit Whitby Abbey, on the East Cliff 2 miles away and climb the 199 steps and visit the birthplace of Dracula himself - atmospheric to say the least, it is a great place to soak in the ambience and enjoy the views. Speaking of views, 4 miles away is Robin Hood's Bay - an old Smugglers Village with sweeping vistas across the sea, and it is also known for its dinosaur fossils. It is absolutely worth a trip, especially with a picnic basket in tow. This is a dog friendly beach.
For a special twist, head off at night and visit Dalby Forest, 16 miles away. One of the best dark sky discovery sites in the country, the Milky Way can be seen by the naked eye. Or take a drive to Northumberland and discover Harry Potter’s Castle.
The location is perfect for exploring both the North Yorkshire Moors National Park and the Yorkshire Heritage Coast which is known for its connections with Captain James Cook. Whitby boasts a 3-mile stretch of Sandy Beach, a colourful Harbour and a Marina, all overlooked and almost protected by the 12th-century Abbey ruins and St Mary’s church. It has fabulous independent shops selling a variety of goods.
Keep an eye on the calendar for the numerous festivals and events that take place each year, from the famous Goth Weekenders to Whitby Regatta and music festivals. There is always something going on in this wonderful coastal town.
Enjoy a memorable Steam Train journey into the well-known villages of Grosmont and Goathland, made famous by the TV series ’Heartbeat’. The North Yorkshire Moors is just a few miles from the door featuring pretty little villages tucked away deep in the valleys are home to Country Pubs and Inns, serving some of Yorkshire’s finest cuisine including fresh fish local crab and lobster and where friendly locals wait to greet you.
